This TIAH Guide gives an introduction to identifying the self-beliefs of staff and how farm managers can improve team productivity by boosting the confidence of their employees.

Sometimes, our worries about ourselves, for example, that we are not very good at something, can hinder development potential. By using coaching techniques, you can help an employee challenge and overcome these negative thoughts to help them improve in their job and reap benefits for your business.

Where do beliefs come from?

Our beliefs about ourselves are often formed in childhood and adolescence. They initially come from those who influence us, such as parents, teachers, and friends.

Positive experiences and encouragement are likely to create positive self-beliefs. Negative experiences and comments, such as criticism, ridicule, or blame, may result in a negative outlook. These are often described as ‘limiting beliefs’.

Creating a positive mindset

As a coach, you need to be sensitive to and aware of the beliefs that might hold someone back. You can learn to recognise them and identify the language and behaviours associated with them. If your employee is happy to work with you on this, you can challenge them on negative thinking that may prevent them from performing and developing at their best. You can raise their awareness and help them change their outlook.

Simply having a conversation with an employee about their future and discussing things they could do to develop and progress can help unlock their potential by helping them see themselves differently. It could even completely change their future path in life!

Overcoming self-limiting beliefs requires self-reflection, challenging negative thoughts, and cultivating a growth mindset. Farmers and growers can benefit from seeking support, engaging in continuous learning, surrounding themselves with positive and forward-thinking individuals, embracing new technologies and practices, and through coaching.

There are lots of techniques you can use as a coach to help employees change limiting beliefs.  Want to learn more?
