As part of our ongoing work to promote farming and growing roles among careers advisers and school teachers, we've created our new Careers in the Science Curriculum document to help teachers make their lessons come to life.
What does the Careers in the Science Curriculum document contain?
We've recently completed work on a project that brings well-rewarded and fascinating jobs in the land-based industries right into the heart of Key Stage 3 and 4 Science lessons.
Produced by an experienced former secondary school science teacher, the PDF is designed to link careers that utilise skills and knowledge as they are learnt in the classroom.
This aspect satisfies the important Gatsby Benchmark 4 (Linking curriculum to careers), while the details of real employers and realistic salary ranges in the resource tie into Gatsby Benchmark 2 (Career and labour market information).
Ruthie Peterson, our Careers Manager, says: "Each job is linked to a lesson or short series of lessons in a clearly identified year and topic. For example, in Year 7, students will cover fertilisation and germination as part of their science and biology learning. This content would cover the early stages of the skills and knowledge needed to become an agronomist or crop vet!"
How can this document be used?
We would suggest that a teacher leaves five to 10 minutes at the end of the relevant lesson and links to the resource by suggesting three jobs from the list on the PDF, with the students then choosing the one they think the day's learning has best prepared them for.
As well as labour market information and curriculum linking, the resource also links to relevant online games, simulations, video footage of role holders in action and the qualifications/training required to take on each role. Some of these could be set as extra research or learning outside the classroom for interested students wanting to learn more about potential careers.
Where can I find it?
The resource can be found on TIAH's Careers Advice Hub. Scroll down to the resources section to see the full PDF and download for free. If you have any other ideas for additions to the project, please let us know, and we can add them at the next project review.
There are currently more than 30 engaging and fulfilling roles included in his resource, linking to lessons from year 7 to 10 across biology, physics and chemistry. Which one will your students want to pursue?
You can find the Careers in the Science Curriculum downloadable document - plus a host of other useful resources providing more information on real jobs in agriculture and horticulture, in our Careers Advice Hub.
