Support needed to bring new entrants to sector

We were invited to take part in a special roundtable event hosted by Farming Minister Mark Spencer, discussing the support needed to encourage new entrants into the industry.

Our Chief Executive Janet Swadling and Head of Membership and Partnerships Tess Howe joined Minister Spencer (pictured centre), a group of new entrants and other industry partners at the meeting.

Janet and Tess highlighted our recent research into industry careers and workforce challenges and reiterated the need for an agreed industry-wide strategy for forecasting and addressing future workforce needs.

Minister Spencer stressed the need for support to be in place for new entrants to build a sustainable, productive, and profitable farming industry.

Tess said: “A sustainable industry for the generations ahead involves attracting and retaining the right number of new entrants with the right skills. At the roundtable, we described the need for a more coordinated and focused approach, both to drawing in new people to the sector and to retaining them.

“Promoting agriculture and horticulture as a progressive, professional, and exciting career choice is one part of the solution, but the industry also needs to develop the support and infrastructure required to support new entrants as they develop their early careers.

"By working together, as we're doing with our industry careers action plan, we all have a better chance of achieving our goals. It was pleasing to hear Minister Spencer back collaboration and TIAH’s part in delivering it.”
