This online course - created by the Agricultural Universities Council's Teaching and Learning group in partnership with TIAH - introduces key sustainability-related themes, including environmental trends, innovation, soil health, nutrition and the policy landscape.

The AUC and TIAH would like to thank the Aurora Trust for its support in developing this course.

Unit 1: Agriculture matters - a lot!

In this unit, you’ll discover how farmers and growers feed the world, support rural economies, protect natural resources, and respond to global challenges like climate change and food insecurity.

You'll also get a chance to reflect on the rewarding aspects of working with nature, the importance of wider education around where our food comes from and how the industry is already playing its part in powering the nation.

Find out how farming is protecting our natural environment.

Unit 2: Integrating agriculture and the environment

Farming is facing a big challenge... How can we produce enough food for a growing population while helping the environment thrive?

In this unit, you’ll briefly explore key sustainable agricultural practices that can support beneficial environmental outcomes. From reduced tillage to livestock integration, you’ll discover how these approaches and others can help restore ecosystems, boost soil health and sequester carbon.

Soil health is crucial to the future productivity of our farmland.

Unit 4: Healthy soils for sustainable agriculture

Healthy soils are the foundation of sustainable agriculture, influencing everything from crop growth to biodiversity.

The way soils are managed can either damage their structure and fertility or unlock their potential to store carbon, regulate water and support life.

In this unit, you'll explore the key components of healthy soil and ways in which farming practices can positively or negatively impact soil properties.

Soil health is crucial to the future productivity of our farmland.
Quality, healthy produce is at the core of everything agriculture and horticulture does.

Unit 5: Nutrition and health

In this unit, you’ll explore the vital role of nutrition in agriculture and horticulture, focusing on the importance of consuming fruits and vegetables for a healthy diet.

You’ll also discover how rapid technological innovations are transforming modern horticulture, challenging traditional views and how fresh, nutritious food reaches consumers through sustainable supply chains.
