Livestock is one of the areas of farming and growing that you can choose to work in or may already work in.
You'll need to develop competency in this specialist area alongside the core competency areas to make sure you have all the skills and knowledge you need to do your job well.

The Livestock area will help you develop your capabilities in:
- Successful breeding and birthing of livestock
- Husbandry and nutrition for livestock
- Safely handling animal waste
- Specific knowledge and skills in dairy, beef, pork, and sheep
The competency areas in Livestock cover breeding, husbandry, nutrition, dairy, beef, pork, and sheep.
We offer learning tailored to livestock farmers and a range of other essential skills, covering a host of issues important to everyone working in arable and productive horticulture.
At this level, you are typically working as part of a team towards the goals of the business.

- Animals are given high-quality and regular feed to improve production in a sustainable way
- Animal waste is managed effectively and in line with legal requirements

- Milk is of high quality
- Milking is efficient and improves the business
Beef, pork, and sheep competencies
Supporting successful production of cattle, pork, or sheep by using knowledge and skills to support and improve the business.
At this level, you are typically supporting the owner or manager of the business and may be supervising other team members.
Supporting the management of livestock production by using knowledge and skills to ensure:
- Breeding and birthing of livestock is successful
- Livestock husbandry is successful
- Animals are given high-quality and regular feed to improve production in a sustainable way
- Animal waste is managed effectively and in line with legal requirements

Supporting dairy production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:
- Milk is of high quality
- Milking is efficient and improves the business
Beef, pork, and sheep competencies
Supporting the production of high-quality cattle, pork, or sheep by using knowledge and skills to make sure animal health and welfare are well managed and improves the business.
At this level, you are typically taking main responsibility for a business area or the overall business.
Managing livestock production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:
- Breeding and birthing of livestock is successful
- Livestock husbandry is successful
- Animals are given high-quality and regular feed regimes to help improve production in a sustainable way
- Animal waste is managed effectively and in line with legal requirements
