Livestock is one of the areas of farming and growing that you can choose to work in or may already work in.

You'll need to develop competency in this specialist area alongside the core competency areas to make sure you have all the skills and knowledge you need to do your job well.

The Livestock area will help you develop your capabilities in:

  • Successful breeding and birthing of livestock
  • Husbandry and nutrition for livestock
  • Safely handling animal waste
  • Specific knowledge and skills in dairy, beef, pork, and sheep

The competency areas in Livestock cover breeding, husbandry, nutrition, dairy, beef, pork, and sheep.

We offer learning tailored to livestock farmers and a range of other essential skills, covering a host of issues important to everyone working in arable and productive horticulture.


At this level, you are typically working as part of a team towards the goals of the business.

Livestock sector competencies

Supporting livestock production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:

  • Breeding and birthing of livestock is successful
  • Husbandry is successful
  • Animals are given high-quality and regular feed to improve production in a sustainable way
  • Animal waste is managed effectively and in line with legal requirements

Dairy-specific competencies

In addition to the livestock sector competencies outlined above, operators in the dairy sector are also supporting successful production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:

  • Milk is of high quality
  • Milking is efficient and improves the business

Beef, pork, and sheep competencies

In addition to the livestock sector competencies outlined above, operators in beef, pork and sheep units are also supporting successful production by using knoweledge and skills to make sure:

  • Beef, pork, or sheepmeat is of high quality
  • Production of beef, pork, or sheepmeat is efficient and improves the business

At this level, you are typically supporting the owner or manager of the business and may be supervising other team members.

  • Livestock husbandry is successful
  • Animals are given high-quality and regular feed to improve production in a sustainable way
  • Animal waste is managed effectively and in line with legal requirements

In addition to the livestock sector competencies outlined above, supervisors in the dairy sector are also supporting dairy production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:

  • Milk is of high quality
  • Milking is efficient and improves the business

Beef, pork, and sheep competencies

In addition to the livestock sector competencies outlined above, supervisors on beef, pork and sheep units are also supporting production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:

  • Beef, pork, or sheepmeat is of high quality
  • Production of beef, pork, or sheepmeat is efficient and improves the business

At this level, you are typically taking main responsibility for a business area or the overall business.

Livestock sector competencies

Managing livestock production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:

  • Breeding and birthing of livestock is successful
  • Livestock husbandry is successful
  • Animals are given high-quality and regular feed regimes to help improve production in a sustainable way
  • Animal waste is managed effectively and in line with legal requirements

Dairy-specific competencies

In addition to the livestock sector competencies outlined above, managers in the dairy sector are also managing production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:

  • Milk production is efficient, taking into consideration the animals' health and welfare requirements
  • They understand the market and can amend production to meet customer requirements, with no/minimal penalties

Beef, pork, and sheep competencies

In addition to the livestock sector competencies outlined above, managers of beef, pork and sheep units are also managing production by using knowledge and skills to make sure:

  • Meat production is efficient, taking into consideration the animals' health and welfare requirements
  • They understand the market and can amend production to meet customer requirements, with no/minimal penalties

Other competency areas

Fruit and crop production, plant health, soil management, sustainability, the environment and harvesting are all key specialisms in horticulture.
Bird welfare and nutrition, as well as the management of their waste, are key specialisms for those working with poultry.
