People competencies
Some skills and knowledge are essential, regardless of which part of farming or growing you want to work in.
These are called core competency areas. The areas are Business, Environment, Health and Safety, Leadership, People and Technical.

The People area will help you develop your capabilities in:
- Making people want to work for you and recruiting, hiring, and keeping staff
Career development
We offer learning focused on managing staff and a host of other essential skills, covering a range of issues important to everyone working in agriculture and horticulture.
The competency areas in People cover recruitment, retention, and career development. They are set at three levels, depending on your role.
At this level, you are typically working as part of a team towards the goals of the business.
Supporting the business by using knowledge and skills to:
- Meet the needs of your job and plan career development
- Be part of a culture of professional development
At this level, you are typically supporting the owner or manager of the business and may be supervising other team members.
Supporting the leadership and management of people by:
- Being part of the recruitment and retention process
- Helping create a culture of professional development and a business that fosters honesty, integrity, and ambition
At this level, you are typically taking main responsibility for a business area or the overall business.
Manage and lead people:
- Through the recruitment and retention process
- To shape a culture of professional development and create a business that fosters honesty, integrity, and ambition
After you've filled in your Capability Profile, you'll see learning relevant to your role and level inside your Recommendations. You'll then be signposted toward learning and CPD opportunities that will work for you.
The Capability Profile is an online tool that allows you to specify what level you are within your current job role and identify areas where you can develop your skills and knowledge.
