Farm workers play a critical part in protecting the environment.

This varied role may focus on crops or livestock, but at its heart will always consider the effects that any farm activity has on the environment.

To this end, a farm worker will be aware of how to prepare risk assessments that focus on environmental risks and hazards around their site.

Farm workers should demonstrate an understanding of how these issues might impact government led sustainability and zero carbon targets.

A practitioner in this role will also recognise the importance of reducing waste and will operate according to safe waste management legislation.

Farm workers are also trained to be aware of the protections afforded to both the site’s wildlife and the livestock via the recognised 5 welfare needs.

For farm livestock, these include maintaining an animal’s environment, supplying its food and water, supporting its natural behaviours, ensuring its access to appropriate social groupings, and protecting its right to freedom from fear and suffering.
