Janet responded to questions from Committee members on various topics, including the challenges of recruiting and retaining staff, the upskilling needed for the sector to optimise the benefits of new technology, and how the education system prepares young people to take up horticultural careers.

Janet gave evidence alongside John Shropshire, Chair of the Independent Review into Labour Shortages in the Food Supply Chain. The session can be viewed online.

The Committee’s enquiry aims to consider the challenges, opportunities, and risks faced by the horticultural sector. In addition, it will explore how policy can support the sector in meeting the Government’s ambitions for levelling up and post-Brexit trade policy.

The deadline for written evidence to the enquiry, to which any interested organisations and individuals may respond, is 10 April 2023.
