Liz Haines spoke to the 2025 Oxford Farming Conference about her Nuffield scholarship on neurodiversity in agriculture.

Neurodiverse staff can thrive in our industry

Tenant dairy farmer Liz Haines has first-hand experience of life and work with neurodiversity. Diagnosed with ADHD in 2022, she has first-hand experience of the difficulties the condition, but also of the joys working in nature and with animals can bring to neurodivergent people.

In January 2025, she spoke at the Oxford Farming Conference about how our industry can be the perfect fit for neurodiverse people, allowing them to thrive and play an important part in effective businesses.

More sources of potential staff

Employers can also look proactively to other sources for potential staff, with armed forces veterans, apprentices and T Level students all viable avenues for farm owners and managers to target when looking to hire.

But with different expectations and vastly differing levels of experience, it can be worth considering how to best talk to, target and manage people from these alternative groups.

Below are guides on how you can best prepare yourself to employ people through these other, often neglected, channels.
